Tony Pook never wanted a desk job. After completing a degree in Fine Arts from the University of Guelph, he caught the travel bug and headed to Australia to study deep sea diving. Working contract to contract, Tony had plenty of freedom and a chance to travel the world. It eventually landed him back in Canada, for a job diving on the hydro dams in Ottawa, ON.
Commercial diving gave Tony the winters off and left him plenty of time to pursue other avenues, including launching his own company. His endearing combination of wool socks and fleece, aptly named the “Pook Toque”, took shape on the family sewing machine and started out on a small scale: he took a dozen hats to a Stratford toy store to see if they might sell. That same afternoon, he got a call back from the owner: she was sold out and wanted more.
The hat has gained popularity through trade shows, craft shows and online sales (pooktoques.com), which Tony pursues between diving contracts. He has even appeared on CBC Television’s Dragon’s Den, with business partner and schoolmate Kevin McKotter.
Tony recognizes that his school years in Huron-Perth, and his faith-based education helped him uncover the path to success.
“Back at Holy Name of Mary School, I was part of a crew that was always in trouble,” he recalls, “but I had a wonderful, respectful teacher who didn’t let us get away with anything. Growing up in the Catholic system was definitely a benefit, especially when I was younger. When someone outlines the values to you as an impressionable kid, they become something you keep for life. You never lose them.”
Later, at St. Michael Catholic Secondary School, Tony enjoyed a strong sense of community that included his basketball teammates. He also learned more about having a strong work ethic and a positive attitude -- values he still reflects today.
“Running your own business, the potential is limitless,” Tony explains. “It’s very motivating to know you’re only restricted by how much you put into it.”
“For me, that’s been pretty inspiring.”
